This is my last week of organizing my sewing room and making it look pretty. This week I made a thread catcher and I’ll walk you through how to do it. If you missed the other parts of my organization series, you can find the ironing board organizer here, and the sewing machine mat here!
Catcher Materials needed:
- Woven fabric in coordinating colors (I used quilters cotton)
- Coordinating thread
- Fusible Interfacing
- Sewing machine
- Iron
Cutting your pieces:
- Main fabric: (1) 12″X 5″
- Lining fabric: (1) 12″X 7″
- Loop fabric: (1) 3″X 5″
- Fusible interfacing: (1) 3/4″X 12″
Let’s get started!
Making the loop:
- Take your fabric for your loop and fold it in half hot dog way and press
- Open it and press both sides in to meet at the center line and press
- Fold back in half again with sides folded in and press
- Topstitch along the open side
Making the bag:
- Grab your lining fabric and lay it out right side up
- Take the loop piece you just made, fold it into a loop and pin it to one end of the top
- Trim off any excess loop fabric to make it the size you want
- Lay your main fabric piece on top of your lining and loop with right sides together sandwiching the loop between them
- Pin or clip the side with the loop and sew along that top edge
- Open and press seam allowance open
- Now, find your interfacing piece and line it up along the seam on the backside of the lining fabric
- Iron your interfacing on following the instructions for your particular interfacing
Making it look more like a bag:
- Fold your fabric in half the hot dog way lining up your main fabric to main fabric, centerlines, and lining fabric to lining fabric
- Pin or clip all the way around leaving a 2″ opening at the bottom of the lining for turning later
- Sew around your pinned area making sure to keep the loop out of the way so it doesn’t get caught in the seam
- Turn your fabric seam side up, and wrestle each end into a square (see pictures below)
- Measure in 1″ from the top and bottom points of each square, draw a line and pin
- Sew across the marked line and cut off the points
Finishing up:
- Turn your bag the right side out pulling the fabric through the hole you left in the lining
- Sew the hole closed in the lining using a ladder stitch
- Push the lining into the main fabric leaving the top edge of the lining (where you put the interfacing) showing
- Press around the top of the bag where the section of the lining fabric is above the main
- Topstitch near the seam between the lining and main fabric
Hang your thread catcher and get sewing!
