Well, today’s post is all about my favorite beginner friendly patterns you can find right here on the 5 out of 4 Patterns website.
You may not know this but 5oo4 has a “Basics” line of patterns designed specifically for a beginner and for those just need so basics for their wardrobe. These patterns include both drawings and photos to help you dive right into sewing with PDF patterns. Basics are also great for the seasoned sewist who wants a go-to pattern that is easy to hack. Let’s talk through each of these awesome beginner friendly patterns.
Mia Shorts and Pants – This pattern comes both adult and kids’ sizing!
Designed for: Light to mid weight Woven Apparel Fabric

The Mia Shorts and Pants are the gateway pants…
That sounds a little wrong, but what I mean is that Mia is perfect for everyone who thinks they don’t wear woven fabric. Mia will make you realize that woven pants can be COMFORTABLE. They can be classy. Even though Mia has an elastic waistband and a wide leg, that doesn’t mean you’ll look sloppy.
The Mia Shorts and Pants are the perfect transition piece for fall and spring. With a wide leg and pull on waist, these are easy to fit and easy to sew! You’ll be exploring ALL the apparel woven fabric in no time!
What is an apparel woven? Glad you asked! These fabrics typically come in 56″ wide and are sold at popular online places such as Mood Fabrics and Fabric.com. Stores such as JoAnn and Hobby Lobby have some too! I got a really nice chambray from HL and the drape is beautiful! The Mia Shorts and Pants will work with flannel and quilting cotton too, but the drape will be very different. (Drape is how it hangs on the body.) Quilting cotton will be a lot stiffer and an apparel woven will look flowy.

This is a tee or tshirt dress that is semi-fitted through the bust, waist and hip. Sheila’s silhouette gives you ease of movement without being shapeless – a balanced blend of style and comfort. It really is an everyday pattern you’ll want to wear every day! Featuring a regular bodice AND an included FBA (Full Bust Adjustment) bodice, three sleeve lengths (short, 3/4 or long), and two hem lengths (top or dress) you can customize your Sheila to your exact wishes.

The Rachel Knit Pants will be your go-to pants for kids. It’s just that simple. Now, whether or not they’re your go-to pants early in the morning when your children are asking for new pants out of your new fabric, that’s up to you. Birthday gift? Baby shower? The oh no all my pants are dirty new pants? These will fill the need for all of those and more reasons!
The Kids’ Rachel Knit Pants pattern is the perfect addition for your wardrobe! I promise, once you make one pair, you’ll realize how quick and easy the Rachel Knit Pants pattern is and make several more!
The Kids’ Rachel Knit Pants is a PDF sewing pattern for semi-fitted knit pants. This pattern is part of our Basics line and as such, they provide very thorough directions with BOTH technical drawings AND photos. This pattern is great for beginners and seasoned sewists. These are a great addition because they can be made for boys and girls and they’re sure to please everyone!
