3. Select Your Fabric
Bodice requires a fabric with 4-way stretch of at least 50% both horizontally and vertically. Look for fabrics with ‘Lycra’ or ‘spandex’ in the fabric content. Cotton Lycra, brushed poly, nylon spandex swim and heavier bamboo spandex are all good choices. Fabrics with a higher stretch percentage (75% or more) are not recommended, but will work with modi cations.
You may want to size down if using swim.
Always make your muslin in a similar fabric as your final garment.
Skirts require a 2-way knit fabric with at least 30% horizontal stretch.
Fabric choice will impact how your skirt looks in a big way. Light to medium weight fabrics (brushed poly, bamboo lycra, lighter jersey) will drape and lay closer to your body. Heavier weight fabrics with more structure (ponte, scuba, liverpool) will are out more from your body, also making the skirt appear shorter. Knits with a higher amount of vertical stretch may need elastic in the waist seam for stablity. Any knit that meets the stretch requirement will work, but may not give the same results.
Bands and bindings require a fabric with AT LEAST 50% stretch and MUST CONTAIN at least 5% Lycra.
Spandex for good recovery. Yardage is calculated using 60″ wide knit fabric. is does NOT account for shrinkage, o-grain fabrics or directional/patterned fabrics. If your fabric measures less than 60″ wide, you may not be able to the knee length skirt, especially in sizes XL-5XL. You may need less yardage for smaller size bodices using non-directional fabric.
It is NOT recommended you use a directional print for the full Circle Skirt cut on the double fold due to the fact that part of the skirt will end up with the print upside down.
4. Collect Other Supplies
- Thread to match
- Ball-point or stretch needles
- Sewing machine (serger is optional)
- Scissors/rotary cutter
- Iron
- Foam Bra Cups (optional if adding the built in bra)
- 1/4″ knit elastic for elastic neckline and arm options
- 3/4″ knit elastic for bra elastic
*** If you are making a swim tankini or dress option, make sure your elastic is salt and chlorine safe.
