Taylor Racerback Modification

July 23, 2019 in Tutorial by Tasha Gray

Have you heard the exciting news?

The Taylor racerback pattern is now available in adult and kids’ sizes!  Of course I could not pass up the opportunity to match my little ones.

I found 2 yards of liverpool fabric from Bow Button Fabrics that I thought we be perfect for our matching set.  However, I knew 2 yards was not going to be quite enough for the sizes and lengths that I wanted.  What to do, what to do? Colorblock the traditional back of course!

It was a quick and easy modification and I even remembered to take pictures along the way to show you how you can do the same.

To get started, print off the pattern pages for the size and length you need for the traditional racerback PLUS the page for the back yoke of the gathered version.

Now we need to add a seam allowance to the back bodice.  Place the back yoke piece on top of the traditional back bodice and draw a horizontal line.

Next, take a hem gauge, ruler, or other marking tool and measure 3/8″ up from the line you just made.  Make a second horizontal line marking the seam allowance for your new colorblocked back bodice.

The back yoke already includes a seam allowance so we don’t need to do anything additional to that pattern piece.

You can fold along the top line that you just drew.  This will move the original back yoke out of the way, but your original pattern piece remains intact.  How convenient is that?

Cut your fabric using the back yoke and your modified lower back bodice pattern pieces.

Sew the pieces together using a 3/8″ seam allowance.

Now you can refer back to the pattern tutorial to complete construction of your Taylor racerback.

That’s it! Pretty straight forward right? This modification can be made on both the Taylor and Kids’ Taylor racerback patterns. Both patterns are on sale through July 28, 2019. You can purchase them separately or buy the bundle which saves even more money.
