Swimsuit Free For All Day 3

July 26, 2017 in Sew Along by Tasha Gray

Alright, day 3 of our Swimsuit Free For All is here and it’s time to finish up our Tidal Wave Shorts.  We are going to add the crotch gusset, attach the waistband, and finally hem or add the leg bands.

Take a look at this video for adding the crotch gusset.  It can be found on the 5oo4 YouTube Channel.

Don’t want to add the crotch gusset?  That’s perfectly fine.   You will skip those steps and assemble your leg pieces as normal without the gusset.

Take and place one leg inside the other leg with RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER. Match up center front and center back of your shorts.  Sew using a stretch stitch, zig-zag, or serger.

Repeat steps with your lining.

You now have 2 pairs of shorts, one with your main fabric and another in your lining fabric.

Take your main fabric shorts and lay them out RIGHT side out with front face up.

Turn your lining shorts inside out with front face up.

Slip your lining shorts INSIDE your main fabric shorts so that they are WRONG SIDES TOGETHER.

Line up all of your seams. You may choose to add a couple of pins/clips (or baste) to keep everything lined up while you sew your waistband.  You will now treat your lining and main shorts as one piece.

Take 2 waistband pieces and place them RIGHT sides together.  Stitch along the short ends.

Repeat for the other 2 waistband pieces.  For MATERNITY options you will take one regular waistband piece and 1 curved piece to complete the above steps.

Take your 2 completed waistband loops and stitch them together around the top.  Now you want to add clear elastic to help stabilize your waistband as well as help them stay up.  Do Not stretch the elastic as you stitch it the waistband.  Stitch along the full length of the seam allowance and then clip off the excess elastic once you get back to your starting point.

Before we hem or add the leg bands, go ahead and try on your Tidal Waves to make sure they fit properly.  If they are loose, you may need to remove excess fabric along the inseam.

Once you have the proper fit we can finish up by either hem or adding the leg bands.
