My kids love their play tool set and love pretending to fix things around the house. They want to be just like Daddy and have a tool belt, so I made them one! It’s a really simple design, that honestly, could have multiple uses! It could be a craft pouch, or a crayon holder, anything you’d like it to be! I can envision my kids taking it outside on a walk to collect sticks, rocks, leaves, and whatever else they come across out there! Ha! For my kids’ tool belt, I used an old belt that we had lying around. I love repurposing old things into something that will get used! If you don’t have a belt, you could make one! There is a Fabric Accessory Belt blog post that you could adapt to make the perfect size belt for your kids’ tool belt! Want to make one? Let’s go!
Materials
- Scraps of fabric
- Fusible interfacing
- Belt (repurpose one or make your own!)
- Double fold Bias Tape
Cut the fabric and interfacing
- You will cut 1 rectangle of fabric and 1 rectangle of interfacing for the main tool belt.
- The dimensions that I used were 11 inches wide by 9 inches long
- You will then cut 1 rectangle of fabric and 1 rectangle of interfacing for the pocket piece
- My dimensions were 11 inches wide by 5 inches long
- You can add length or width if you’d like a bigger tool belt. The finished dimensions of my kids’ tool belt are 11 inches wide by 6.5 inches long.

Attach the interfacing to the fabric
- Follow the directions of your specific fusible interfacing to fuse the interfacing to the fabric.
- You will put the interfacing on the wrong side of the fabric.

Time to sew your Kids’ Tool Belt!
- Start by hemming the top of your pocket.
- Fold the top edge toward the wrong side of the pocket by 1/4 inch.
- Press well.
- Then, fold another 1/4 inch to enclose all the raw edges.
- Press well again.
- Stitch along the edge.

- Next, I made a memory hem for the casing.
- Fold the top edge of the main belt piece toward the wrong side.
- Press well.
- Don’t sew it yet, you’ll do that later.

- Put your pocket piece on top of your main fabric piece. The pocket and main will both be right sides up!
- Baste around the sides and bottom, if you want.

Time to add the Bias Tape
- Unfold your bias tape so that it’s flat.
- Fold the short edge toward the wrong side of the bias tape by 1/4 inch.
- Press well.
- Line up the raw edges of the bias tape to the raw edge on the side of your kids’ tool belt.
- Match the folds at the top of the tool belt and the top of the bias tape.
- Pin all down the side.
- You will sew along the crease.
- Cut off the extra binding at the bottom.
- Now, flip the tool belt over to the wrong side.
- You are going to fold the bias tape over the raw edges.
- Top stitch the bias. I used a zig zag stitch just because I like the look of it.
Continue adding the bias tape to the bottom and other side
- You are going to repeat the bias tape process 2 more times to add bias tape to the bottom and side of the kids’ tool belt.
- Start by folding the short edge of the bias tape at the beginning so that the raw edges are enclosed.
- Then, put the folded bias tape on top of the bottom of the last bias tape that you just sewed onto the side.
- Sew along the crease again.
- Flip the bias tape over the raw edges and top stitch just like you just did on the side.

- Ok, one last bias tape piece to add!
- Start by folding the short raw edge of the binding and press well.
- Line up the folded bias edge on top of the bottom bias tape piece that you’ve just sewn.
- Pin all along the side of the tool belt.
- At the top, cut the bias binding 1/4 inch higher than the tool belt.
- This will allow you to fold the bias to enclose the raw edge.
- Now, sew along the crease.
- Flip the bias tape over the raw edges.
- Top Stitch.
- Woo! Done with bias!

The Kids’ Tool Belt needs pockets!
- On the bottom of the pocket, measure from the edge of the bias 3.5 inches in and put a chalk mark.
- Now, do the same on the top of the pocket.
- Draw a straight line down the pocket connecting these two marks.
- Be sure to use chalk or a washable pen so that you don’t see your line after stitching!
- Stitch along that line.
- Do this again from the other side of the tool belt, so you’ll have two lines each 3.5 inches from the sides.

Create the casing for the belt to go into
- Fold the top of the tool belt toward the wrong side by 2 inches.
- The belt that I used was 1.5 inches high. If your belt is bigger, you’ll need a bigger casing.
- Make sure that 1/4 inch memory hem that you did in the beginning stays folded.
- Press well.
- Stitch along the edge.

Thread the belt through the casing and you are done!!
- Put a safety pin on the end of the belt.
- Put the pin and belt into the casing.
- Thread the belt into the casing until it comes out of the other side.

You made a Kids’ Tool Belt! Yay!
